How to report a copy of your work on a Shopify store

Checked against the official sources below on

Shopify handles copyright complaints about stores on its platform through an online DMCA form. It asks for direct links to each page, because a general shop link won't be accepted. Madeproof doesn't have a Shopify filing kit, so you'd complete this form yourself.

Before you start

  • The direct link to each individual page containing the copied content.
  • A link to your original work, or a description if you have no link.
  • Your legal name and contact details.
  • A note of exactly what's copied on each page, such as specific images, videos or text.

How to file

  • Open Shopify's DMCA form at shopify.com/legal/tools/report-an-issue/dmca. Shopify calls this the most efficient route.
  • Enter the details above, and confirm your good-faith belief that the use isn't authorised and that your information is accurate.
  • State, under penalty of perjury, that you own the copyright or are authorised to act for the owner, then sign.
  • If you can't use the form, Shopify also accepts notices by email to legal@shopify.com or by post. Its policy page has the address.

After you file

  • If Shopify reasonably believes the notice is complete and valid, it will generally remove the reported content and tell the merchant through their admin. In some cases it may decline.
  • Shopify doesn't publish how long this takes.
  • A copy of your notice, including your contact details, may be given to the person who posted the content.
  • The merchant can send a counter-notice. If you don't tell Shopify about legal action within 10 to 14 business days, the content may be reposted.
  • Shopify says it terminates stores for repeat infringement in appropriate cases, and may disable a store for a single willful or egregious instance.

If the Shopify route doesn't apply

This form only covers content on Shopify. For a site hosted elsewhere, look for that site's or host's own copyright contact, and see our guide to writing a DMCA notice. False or bad-faith notices are punishable by law, so only report what you know is yours. This guide isn't legal advice.
